Giving

The word “tithe” is literally translated “ten percent.” Biblically, it refers to the first 10% of everything earned. This is the baseline for giving that God expects from his people. In the agrarian culture of the Israelites, it was grain, olives, wine, and meat. In our culture today, it translates into dollars and cents.

“Bring the whole tithe into the storehouse, that there may be food in my house. Test me in this,” says the Lord Almighty, “and see if I will not throw open the floodgates of heaven and pour out so much blessing that there will not be room enough to store it.” Malachi 3:10 NIV

Giving is a commitment to God’s work. Psalm 50 declares that God doesn’t need anything from us. He owns the forest and the cattle on a thousand hills. But from cover to cover, the Bible demonstrates that God chooses to work through his people. Our tithe is one of the many ways that we say, “Sign me up! Take my gift and multiply it into a flood of generosity.” 

As leaders of our ministry, both our staff and elders lead the way in giving by tithing 10% of their income to the church.

At Northridge, we model the tithe as a church by taking at least the first 10% of every dollar that comes in and giving it away. We have a list of local and global outreach efforts that we contribute to regularly through partnerships and serving. The remaining amount funds our ministry by paying the mortgage, building maintenance, staff salaries, ministry programming, supplies, etc. The money we are given is diligently prayed over as our leadership seeks to steward it with wisdom and faithfulness.
